Well-known for its application acceleration products, Riverbed Technology delves into the next logical phase of speeding up traffic across WANs with its new accelerator technology, called Granite. Simply put, Riverbed’s Granite does for WAN storage, what Riverbed’s Steelhead does for application over the WAN—acceleration.

Riverbed Granite’s primary purpose is to improve storage performance across the WAN. It accomplishes that by carrying out block data transfers across WANs without the many back-and-forth exchanges that make such movements time-consuming now. Granite can essentially achieve the same thing with blocks of data that Riverbed’s Steelhead appliance does with applications, slashing wait times at branches, which can also provide the foundation for enterprises to centralize their storage.

Eric Wolford, executive vice president and general manager of the company’s products group told eWEEK: “Granite’s ability to accelerate storage is only part of the story. Granite will also improve virtual desktop performance over long distances, making VDI [virtual desktop infrastructure] possible for many more remote users.”

At the company’s annual Financial Analyst Day Feb. 2 in Sunnyvale, Calif., CEO Rory Read [...]]]> Advanced Micro Devices executives are laying out a roadmap for future chips that they say will be fundamentally different from larger rival Intel and leverage the work they’ve done integrating the graphics and CPUs onto a single piece of silicon.

At the company’s annual Financial Analyst Day Feb. 2 in Sunnyvale, Calif., CEO Rory Read and CTO Mark Papermaster, among the new cadre of top-level executives at the chip maker, outlined a strategy they call Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA), which will bring the graphics and compute capabilities on the chip even closer, and make it easier for workloads to take advantage of the two.

The executives also said they plan to open up their processors to third-party IP, a move designed to enable AMD to offer customers customized chips when needed. At the same time, the company also unveiled more of the chip roadmaps for the next couple of years, noting that the HSA initiative will begin showing up in chips in force starting in 2014.

The company also plans to roll out the first chip aimed at the booming tablet market later this year, and showed off what executives said was a reference design for “ultrathins,” very thin and light notebooks that AMD officials have said will be slightly larger than the Ultrabooks pushed by Intel but

While the latest browser version features relatively few cosmetic changes, there are some under-the-hood additions that could prove vital for developers trying to create next-generation Web experiences.

In the desktop version of Firefox 10.0, Mozilla has hidden the forward button until the user navigates back. It has fixed some bugs, including one that sometimes crashed the browser when the user attempted to move bookmarks. But the bigger story here is the new built-in developer tools.

“With Page Inspector, developers can peek into a page’s structure and layout without having to leave Firefox,” read a Jan. 31 posting on The Mozilla Blog. In addition, a new tool called Style Inspector lets developers more easily edit Websites, and Scratchpad “now uses the Eclipse Orion code editor to provide syntax highlighting and other features that make it easier and simpler to write JavaScript.”

A new Full-Screen API lets developers build Web games and other multimedia experiences that utilize the entire PC screen. Mozilla has also introduced support for Anti-Aliasing for WebGL, a Web standard for displaying hardware-accelerated 3D graphics without third-party software, and CSS 3D Transforms, which transforms two-dimensional elements into 3D via HTML5.

McAfee introduced a new version of Mobile Security to protect smartphones and tablets from malicious applications and Web malware.

Mobile Security 2.0 offers antivirus, anti-theft services and protection from malicious Websites and applications, McAfee said Jan. 30. The security software also includes online device management where users can remotely wipe data on the device and on a removable Secure Digital (SD) card.

Call and Short Message Service (SMS) filtering capabilities to block unwanted calls and spam text messages are also part of the latest version. Uninstall protection features prevent unauthorized users from uninstalling or bypassing McAfee security features, according to McAfee.

McAfee added an application-protection feature called App Alert to Mobile Security, which provides users with information about what the applications are doing with users’ personal information. Although users can already see what phone functions the applications are accessing, App Alert simplifies the list by highlighting applications that request access to personal information such as the contacts list.

“It is increasingly clear that using a smartphone without security means any sensitive information, such as photos, bank account information or company data on that mobile device is at risk of falling into the wrong hands,” said John Thode, executive vice president and general manager of consumer, mobile and small business at McAfee.

“Teens and young adults are the most active Internet users on the planet,” explained Bradley Horowitz, Google’s vice president of product management for Google+. “And surprise, surprise: They’re also human beings who enjoy spending time with friends and family. Put these two things together, and it’s clear that teens will increasingly connect online.”

Google is taking care to make sure teens share what they want to share in the right context, a bid to staunch the gross oversharing on social networks between teen connections who may be more acquaintances than actual friends.

The Wall Street Journal, citing an unnamed source with knowledge of the situation, reported Jan. 27 that Facebook will file for its long-awaited initial public offering of stock on Wednesday, Feb. 1.

If this event, which had been projected by several financial analysts to happen later this spring, does indeed take place, it will easily be the largest IT IPO in history. The sale is expected to bank somewhere in the vicinity of $10 billion for the social network and value the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company at a whopping $100 billion.

In contrast, Google’s Aug. 19, 2004 IPO on the NASDAQ exchange garnered $1.7 billion at $85 per each of 19 million shares for the search engine and Web services company. Google now is valued at $140 billion. Google was trading at $576.38 on Jan. 27, up $8 on the day.

The largest tech IPO on record is that of Germany-based Infineon, which raised $5.9 billion in 2000.

Facebook recently was valuated at about $50 billion, following a $1.5 billion investment from Goldman Sachs and Digital Sky Technologies announced Jan. 22.

As part of that ramp-up, HP is releasing version 2.0 of Enyo, the webOS developer tool. Developers using the tool will have the ability to write webOS applications supported across a broad range of mobile devise and desktop Web browsers, including iOS and Android platforms.

HP’s webOS roadmap includes a release of Enyo 2.1 in April, followed by Enyo 2.2 in July. The Open webOS Beta will appear in August, followed by Open webOS 1.0 in September. HP is making webOS code available under the Apache License, Version 2.0.

HP first announced it would make webOS an open-source project in December. As part of that announcement, the company indicated that it would serve as an “investor” and work to “avoid fragmentation” of the code, although the extent of its financial participation remains unclear. The decision gives a broad cross-section of players—from developers to HP engineers—the ability to tweak and enhance the platform as they see fit.
